Deacons and their wives from across the Diocese gathered at St Joseph the Worker, Luton, on Saturday, 11 July, for the annual Deacons and Wives Day. It was a joyful occasion celebrating the ministry of the Permanent Diaconate, the support of family life, and the bonds of fraternity shared by those called to serve.

The annual gathering provides an opportunity for permanent deacons and their wives to come together in prayer, friendship and mutual encouragement. It is a valued chance to reconnect with fellow deacons and their families, strengthening the sense of community that is such an important part of diaconal ministry.

The celebration began with Holy Mass, celebrated by Canon Tony Brennan, Diocesan Director for the Permanent Diaconate. During the Mass, the permanent deacons renewed their commitment to the ministry they have received through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, reaffirming their call to serve Christ and His Church through the ministries of charity, proclaiming the Gospel and assisting at the altar.

The liturgy also marked two significant milestones for men preparing to become permanent deacons. Three candidates were formally admitted to Candidacy, a public step in which the Church recognises their readiness to continue their formation and their intention to receive ordination in due course.

In addition, six men were instituted as Acolytes. The Ministry of Acolyte is one of the final stages of formation before ordination. An instituted acolyte has a special role in assisting the priest and deacon during the liturgy, particularly at the altar, and may also assist in the distribution of Holy Communion when required. Receiving this ministry is an important sign of a candidate’s growing commitment and preparation for ordained service.

Following Mass, deacons, candidates, their wives and families enjoyed a shared lunch together, providing further opportunity for fellowship and celebration.

The day was a joyful reminder of the vital contribution made by permanent deacons within the life of the Diocese and of the invaluable support offered by their wives and families. As the Church continues to encourage new vocations to the Permanent Diaconate, the gathering celebrated not only those already serving but also those preparing to answer God’s call through lives of faithful service.
