On Sunday, March 9, 2025, Northampton Cathedral witnessed a significant milestone as 38 catechumens and 62 candidates participated in the Rite of Election, marking the highest number of participants in the Diocese of Northampton in a decade. Bishop David Oakley presided over the ceremony, welcoming these individuals who are preparing to join the Catholic Church at Easter.
The Rite of Election is a pivotal event in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), signifying the Church’s recognition of the catechumens’ readiness for the sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. Candidates, already baptized in other Christian traditions, are also acknowledged as they prepare to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.
The ceremony at Northampton Cathedral reflects a broader trend of increasing interest in the Catholic faith. In 2011, over 4,700 individuals across England and Wales participated in similar ceremonies, with our diocese recording 91 participants that year.
Bishop Oakley, who has served as our Bishop since his appointment by Pope Francis in 2020, expressed profound joy at the growing number of individuals embracing the Catholic faith. He emphasized the importance of community support during this transformative period, acknowledging the roles of families, sponsors, and parish communities in nurturing the faith journeys of the catechumens and candidates.
As these 100 individuals continue their spiritual preparation during Lent, we eagerly anticipates their full initiation into the Church at the upcoming Easter Vigil, symbolising a vibrant and growing faith community.
