Couples from across the Diocese of Northampton gathered at the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate and St Thomas of Canterbury on Saturday 5 September for the annual Mass in celebration of Marriage and Family Life.

The Mass, celebrated by Fr Simon Penhalagan, was an opportunity to give thanks for the vocation of marriage, celebrate couples marking significant wedding anniversaries and pray for married couples and families across the diocese.

During the celebration, couples were invited to renew their commitment to one another, extending their hands as their wedding rings were blessed once again. The simple but powerful gesture was a reminder of the promises made on their wedding day and of the love and faithfulness that have sustained them through the years.

Certificates were also presented on behalf of the diocese to couples celebrating significant wedding anniversaries in 2026, ranging from first anniversaries to remarkable milestones of 60, 62, 65 and 67 years of marriage.

A celebration of love, commitment and faithfulness

In his homily, Fr Simon reflected on the witness offered by couples who continue to choose one another throughout the joys and challenges of married life.

He spoke particularly movingly of Frances and Eddie Corbett, who had celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in February. The couple had attended previous diocesan celebrations together, always arriving at the end of the procession “radiant with joy”.

Sadly, Eddie died on Tuesday 1 September, just days before this year’s celebration.

Fr Simon recalled the joy with which the couple had celebrated their marriage over the years, encouraging those gathered to recognise the beauty of the commitment they themselves were celebrating.

Reflecting on the readings from the Rite of Marriage, Fr Simon highlighted the call to seek what is “true”, “honourable”, “just”, “pure”, “lovely” and “commendable”, alongside Christ’s commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.”

He acknowledged that this is a demanding call. Marriage, like every human relationship, has its good days and its difficult days. Yet the couples gathered were there because, despite human frailty, they had continued to seek to honour, love and support one another.

Fr Simon described married couples as “a living icon” of the love of God, a visible witness to the world of Christ’s faithful and self-giving love for his Church.

“We celebrate that today. We honour it today. We rejoice in it today. Thank you for your commitment. Thank you, even though it might not feel like it, for your excellence.”

Supporting couples throughout married life

The celebration also highlighted the breadth of support available to couples through the Church and Catholic marriage organisations.

Representatives from the Alliance of Catholic Marriage Organisations (ACMO) were present at the Mass, giving couples the opportunity to discover more about the different forms of support available. The Alliance brings together Catholic organisations seeking to provide clearer and more joined-up pathways of support for couples at different stages of their relationships.

Among those represented were:

  • Catholic Marriage Care, which provides marriage preparation, relationship support and counselling.
  • Teams of Our Lady, which brings married couples together in small groups for spiritual formation, mutual support and reflection on their married lives.
  • Marriage Encounter, which offers retreats and experiences designed to help couples enrich and renew their relationship.
  • Engaged Encounter, which provides marriage preparation for engaged couples preparing for married life.
  • Retrouvaille, which offers a programme of hope for couples seeking to heal and renew marriages experiencing serious difficulties.

Together, these organisations provide support ranging from preparation for marriage and spiritual enrichment to relationship counselling, crisis support and opportunities for couples to rediscover and strengthen their commitment. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference recognises these organisations as valuable partners in supporting marriage and family life.

Their presence at the Mass was a reminder that the Church’s accompaniment of married couples does not end on the wedding day. Rather, couples are invited to continue growing together in love, faith and holiness throughout the whole of married life.

The Mass was therefore both a celebration of the couples who have travelled many years together and an encouragement to those at every stage of their journey.

As the Diocese gives thanks for these couples and their years of love and faithfulness, we pray that God will continue to bless them, strengthen their marriages and accompany them and their families in the years ahead.
