Priests from across the Catholic Diocese of Northampton have travelled together to Rome this week for a Jubilee Pilgrimage marking a special moment of prayer, fraternity, and renewal of mission.
The pilgrimage forms part of the wider Jubilee Year celebrations taking place across the universal Church. For our diocesan clergy, the visit offers an opportunity to pray at the tombs of the Apostles, celebrate the Eucharist in the major basilicas, and entrust their priestly ministry to the intercession of the saints.
A particular highlight of the pilgrimage was the opportunity to meet Pope Leo XIV following the weekly Papal Audience in St Peter’s Square. The Holy Father greeted the priests warmly, offering words of encouragement for their ministry and assuring them of his prayers. The encounter was a profound moment of communion with the Successor of Peter and a reminder of the universal mission shared by every priest.
During their time in Rome, the priests will reflect on their shared vocation to serve the people of God throughout the towns, cities, and villages of the diocese. This includes parishes with deep roots, such as those ministered by clergy with decades of experience in Northampton, as well as communities preparing for future growth through the witness of seminarians currently in formation.
The pilgrimage provided a time of thanksgiving for significant milestones celebrated this year, including long-standing commitments to diocesan service and important personal anniversaries within our community. Moments such as these remind us of the enduring faithfulness of God and the generosity of those who serve Him.
As the priests of the diocese pray in the heart of the Church, they carry with them the intentions of all our parishioners, especially those facing difficulty or uncertainty at this time. Among these are the parishioners of St Gregory’s, Northampton, who are united in prayer following the recent fire at their church. The clergy offer their prayers in Rome for the parish’s swift restoration, for the safety of all involved, and for the continued strengthening of the community.
The Diocese looks forward to welcoming back our clergy following their days of renewal in the Eternal City. May the graces received deepen their joy in ministry and strengthen the bonds of communion throughout the diocese.
Sts Peter and Paul, pray for us.
St Thomas Becket, pray for us.
