The Roman Catholic Diocese of Northampton has launched the search for a new Independent Chair of its Safeguarding Advisory Board (SAB), as the current Chair prepares to retire at the end of 2025 after several years of dedicated and effective service.

Established in 2021 as part of the Church’s renewed safeguarding structures, the SAB plays a vital role in ensuring that the Diocese remains a safe and accountable environment for all—especially children and vulnerable adults. Operating with transparency, professionalism, and compassion, the Board provides independent advice to the diocesan safeguarding team and the Safeguarding Subcommittee, drawing on a wealth of multi-agency expertise from fields such as social care, the police, healthcare, and local authorities.

The Diocese is now seeking an experienced safeguarding professional to take up the voluntary role of Chair, overseeing the work of the Board and supporting the Safeguarding Coordinator in managing complex safeguarding cases, policies, and training. This is a key leadership opportunity for someone with a passion for protecting the vulnerable and a strong understanding of both safeguarding practice and the ethos of the Catholic Church.

The new Chair will be appointed for a three-year term (renewable), and meetings are held quarterly—primarily online, with one in-person meeting annually in Northampton. While the role is unpaid, reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Applicants should be seasoned safeguarding professionals with senior-level experience, ideally from the statutory sector, with strong analytical and chairing skills, and a collaborative, approachable manner. A working knowledge of the Catholic faith and the safeguarding landscape in Church and society is desirable.

The successful candidate will be welcomed at the December 2025 meeting, with the possibility of joining earlier in the year to support a smooth handover.
