The Diocese of Northampton’s newest priest, Fr Chris Colaco, returned to his roots this week as hundreds of people gathered in his home city of Mangaluru, India, to celebrate a joyful Thanksgiving Mass following his ordination to the priesthood.
The celebration took place at St Lawrence Church and Shrine, Bondel, where priests, religious sisters, members of the Jesus Youth Movement, family, friends and parishioners united in giving thanks for Fr Chris’ vocation. Ordained to the priesthood on 20 June by Bishop Emeritus Peter Doyle at Northampton Cathedral, Fr Chris is now serving as Assistant Priest in Corby and is the first priest from the worldwide Jesus Youth Movement to be ordained for the Diocese of Northampton.
The Thanksgiving Mass celebrated not only Fr Chris’ priesthood but also the remarkable journey that has led him to ministry. Born in Mangaluru and raised in London, his vocation was nurtured through the Jesus Youth Movement, missionary service in Uganda, and priestly formation in both India and the United Kingdom. He completed his theological studies at St Mary’s College, Oscott, before being ordained for the Diocese of Northampton.
Preaching during the Mass, Fr Chris reflected on his own call to the priesthood, describing how prayer, the sacraments, missionary experiences and the support of the Jesus Youth community helped him discern God’s invitation. He encouraged young people to remain open to God’s plans for their lives, reminding them that lasting joy comes through trusting in Christ and responding generously to His call.
Following the Mass, a reception brought together Fr Chris’ parents, family members, Jesus Youth leaders from India, clergy, religious and many well-wishers. Speakers reflected on the significance of his ordination, not only for the Diocese of Northampton but also for the global Jesus Youth Movement, whose missionary spirit has inspired countless young Catholics around the world.
For the Diocese of Northampton, Fr Chris’ priesthood is a source of great joy and hope. Just over a month into his ministry, his witness already speaks of a vocation rooted in prayer, missionary discipleship and a wholehearted desire to serve God’s people.
Please keep Fr Chris in your prayers as he begins his priestly ministry in Corby, and pray that many more young people will have the courage to respond generously to God’s call.
