More than 650 people from across the Luton and Dunstable Pastoral Area came together this weekend for the annual Blessing of Vale Cemetery, in a moving witness of faith, hope and remembrance.
Despite the summer heat, families, friends and parish communities gathered to pray for those who have died and to remember the loved ones they continue to carry in their hearts.
The annual blessing is a cherished tradition that reminds us of one of the central beliefs of the Catholic faith: that death is not the end. We believe that, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are offered the hope of eternal life. As we pray for those who have died, we also ask God to comfort those who mourn and to strengthen us in the promise of the resurrection.
Priests and deacons from across the deanery took part in the service. (A deanery is a group of neighbouring Catholic parishes that work together in a particular area.) The homily, a reflection on the Scripture readings and their meaning for our lives, was given by Fr Biju Chittuparamban, who encouraged those present to place their trust in God’s enduring love and mercy.
The service concluded with the final blessing given by Canon Michael Harrison. Afterwards, those attending were invited to collect holy water and a prayer sheet before making their way through the cemetery.
Holy water is water that has been blessed by a priest. Catholics use it as a reminder of their Baptism and as a sign of asking for God’s blessing. Many people sprinkled holy water on the graves of their loved ones, while others spent time in quiet prayer, reflecting on precious memories and entrusting those who have died to God’s loving care.
The peaceful sight of hundreds of people spread throughout the cemetery, united in prayer and remembrance, was a powerful reminder that no one grieves alone. As a community of faith, we continue to support one another, pray for those who have died, and place our hope in Christ’s promise that death will one day give way to everlasting life.
May all our faithful departed rest in peace, and may the Lord bring comfort and hope to all who mourn.
