On the evening of Tuesday 22 April, clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Northampton gathered at the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate and St Thomas of Canterbury for a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving for the life of Pope Francis, who died peacefully on Easter Monday morning, 21 April 2025.

Monsignor Sean Healy, Provost of the Cathedral Chapter, presided at the Mass, which was attended by many priests of the diocese, representatives from local Christian communities, and ecumenical guests, including the Bishop of Brixworth, the Rt Revd John Holbrook.

In his homily, Monsignor Healy reflected on the profound legacy of Pope Francis, the 266th successor of St Peter, drawing inspiration from the Easter readings that highlight the early Church’s missionary zeal. He spoke of the Pope’s unwavering proclamation of the risen Christ, his humble lifestyle, and his constant emphasis on mercy, justice, love, and inclusivity.

Highlighting the Pope’s emphasis on missionary discipleship, Monsignor Healy noted:

“Each one of us, like Mary Magdalene, is called to be a witness to the good news of Jesus Christ… Pope Francis reminded us that we too are called to be missionary disciples, sharing our gifts and building the Church.”

He also recalled the Pope’s simplicity, choosing a humble residence over papal opulence, and his deep devotion to Our Lady under the title Salus Populi Romani—the health of the Roman people—whose image he visited over a hundred times during his pontificate.

Monsignor Healy concluded by invoking the hope of the resurrection, praying that Pope Francis be welcomed into eternal life with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your master.”

Pope Francis’ funeral will take place at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Saturday 26 April at 10am. The Diocese of Northampton invites all to unite in prayer during this solemn time.

A book of prayers and reflections has been placed in Northampton Cathedral for anyone who wishes to pay tribute or leave a message of thanksgiving for the life and ministry of Pope Francis.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
