The pastoral area of Luton has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing discernment process, as clergy and laity gathered for a mid-point meeting to reflect on progress so far and look ahead to the next phase.
This local initiative is part of a broader diocesan journey and echoes similar discernment already undertaken in Aylesbury and currently underway in North Northants. More widely, it aligns with the global movement towards synodality, encouraged by Pope Francis, as the Catholic Church seeks to become a community that walks together, listens deeply, and discerns prayerfully.
Listening and Engagement
At the mid-point gathering, participants heard a summary of the key themes that have emerged from the listening phase. Insights into how communities are living out their faith, the challenges they face, and their hopes for the future were shared, along with key data about parish life in Luton—such as Mass attendance, sacramental activity, and the number of clergy.
In keeping with the synodal vision of the Church, the process has prioritised prayerful, inclusive dialogue:
-
Around 40 local listeners were trained by the diocesan team to lead and support the conversations.
-
55 responses were received from parishes, schools, groups, and individuals.
-
A broad diversity of ages, ethnicities, and ministries took part.
-
Groups used the “Conversation in the Spirit” method, ensuring every voice was heard with respect and attentiveness.
-
A local discernment group of clergy and laity synthesised the contributions and identified the main themes.
Next Steps in the Journey
As the discernment continues, the local group will:
-
Develop criteria for decision-making based on what has been heard and discerned.
-
Create a set of possible scenarios for the future pastoral organisation of the area.
-
Present these scenarios at an open meeting, inviting wider comment and input to shape the final vision.
-
Draft a strategic plan and accompanying implementation plan.
These will be submitted to Bishop David in the autumn as part of a diocesan-wide effort to plan for a sustainable and mission-focused future.
A Synodal Church in Action
The Luton discernment process is a concrete expression of the Church’s synodal path—a path marked by communion, participation, and mission. Inspired by Pope Francis’ call for renewal, it reflects a commitment to collaborative leadership, lay involvement, and spiritual discernment at every level.
In walking this path together, the Church in Luton is responding to the Holy Spirit’s invitation to become ever more faithful to the Gospel and ever more responsive to the needs of the people it serves.
