The Diocese of Northampton gathered in prayer and solemnity on Palm Sunday as Bishop David Oakley celebrated the beginning of Holy Week with a moving Mass at Northampton Cathedral. The liturgy began with the traditional procession of palms, recalling Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Clergy, servers, and parishioners processed from the Cathedral courtyard into the church, holding palm branches and singing hymns of praise, symbolising the beginning of the journey towards the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of the Lord.

In his homily, Cathedral Dean Fr Simon Penhalagan reflected deeply on the meaning of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and the days that followed. He invited the faithful to contemplate the model that Christ sets for his followers — a life marked by humility, obedience, and total self-giving. “To follow Christ,” Fr Simon said, “is to walk the same road he did, to embrace the cross, and to trust that it leads not to defeat, but to the full revelation of his divinity.”

The Cathedral was filled with parishioners, young and old, joining together in reverence for this solemn and sacred moment in the Church’s liturgical year.

As the Diocese enters Holy Week, Bishop David encouraged all to walk closely with Christ through the coming days, from the Last Supper to the Cross, and onward to the joy of the Resurrection.
