Our fifth day in Rome began under an overcast sky as we made our way to the Catacombs of San Callixtus, one of the oldest and most significant Christian burial sites. Here, we were given a fascinating guided tour by a member of the Salesian community, who shared the rich history of these underground tombs, where early Christians, including popes and martyrs, were laid to rest. Walking through these sacred passages was a moving reminder of the strength and faith of those who came before us.

Following our time in the catacombs, we travelled by coach to Palazzola, the beautiful retreat and pilgrimage centre of the Venerable English College, perched on the hills overlooking Lake Albano and Castel Gandolfo. This historic town is best known as the traditional summer residence of the Popes, offering stunning views and a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of Rome. As we arrived, the clouds began to lift, and we were greeted by breathtaking views of the lake. We celebrated Mass in Palazzola, a peaceful and reflective moment in the midst of our pilgrimage, before sitting down to a delicious three-course lunch. With the sun now shining, we spent time on the veranda, soaking in the beauty and serenity of our surroundings.

On our way back to Rome, we stopped at Tre Fontane, the traditional site of St. Paul’s martyrdom. According to tradition, after his execution, his head bounced three times, and at each spot where it touched the ground, a spring of water miraculously appeared—hence the name “Three Fountains”. Today, the site is home to a Trappist monastery, where visitors can pray and reflect on the Apostle’s sacrifice and enduring legacy.

The rest of the evening was left free for pilgrims to explore the city at their own pace, whether visiting more sacred sites, enjoying Rome’s culture, or simply taking in the atmosphere of this historic city.

Tomorrow, we leave Rome behind and set out for the next chapter of our pilgrimage: Assisi. Stay with us as we continue our journey of faith!
