After another morning of fellowship over breakfast, we set off by coach for a special visit to the Venerable English College, the historic seminary that has formed English and Welsh priests for over 450 years. We were warmly welcomed by the Rector, Fr. Stephen Wang, who guided us through the college, sharing its rich history, stories of its 44 martyrs, and its role in shaping the faith of generations. These brave men gave their lives for the faith, and their legacy continues to inspire vocations today.
During our visit, we had the special opportunity to venerate five sacred relics housed under the altar—St. Philip Howard, St. Thomas Becket (our diocesan patron), St. Ralph Sherwin, St. Edmund of East Anglia, and St. Thomas More. Standing before these relics was a deeply moving moment, connecting us to the courage and holiness of these great English saints who stood firm in their faith.
Our visit culminated in the celebration of Mass, a profound experience in this sacred place of formation and witness.
Following our time at the English College, we made our way to St. Peter’s Square, where we had hoped to join Pope Francis for the traditional Angelus prayer. However, due to the Holy Father’s ill health, the Angelus was unfortunately cancelled. Despite this, our pilgrimage group gathered in the square, and Bishop David Oakley led us in praying the Angelus at midday, uniting our prayers with those of the Church around the world and offering them for the Pope’s recovery.
The afternoon provided free time for pilgrims to explore the Eternal City at their own pace. Many took the opportunity to visit some of Rome’s most famous landmarks, deepening their experience of this extraordinary city. A particularly special moment for some was the chance to venerate the relics of St. Thérèse of Lisieux at the church atop the Spanish Steps—a beautiful and unexpected blessing on our journey.
As evening fell, we gathered once more for dinner, sharing stories of our experiences and reflecting on the graces of the day. Though our pilgrimage is nearing its end, the encounters, prayers, and moments of faith continue to deepen our journey as Pilgrims of Hope.
