Our pilgrimage continued today as we bid farewell to Rome and set out early for the peaceful and sacred town of Assisi. The journey by coach took us through the stunning Umbrian countryside, offering time for reflection as we approached the birthplace of St. Francis. After three and a half hours, we arrived at our hotel, nestled just beneath the majestic Rocca Maggiore Castle, in time for a welcome lunch together.
The afternoon began with a visit to the magnificent Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels, home to the Porziuncola, the tiny chapel where St. Francis founded the Franciscan Order. Here, we celebrated Mass, taking in the profound spiritual atmosphere of this sacred place, so closely tied to the life and mission of St. Francis.
Following Mass, we journeyed by coach to Rivotorto, a site of great significance in Franciscan history. The church here is built over the Sacred Hut, the humble shelter where St. Francis and his first companions lived as they began their radical way of life dedicated to poverty and service.
Before returning to our hotel, we made a moving stop at the Commonwealth War Cemetery, a solemn place of remembrance for those who gave their lives during World War II. Here, we paused in prayer, reflecting on the sacrifices made for peace and freedom.
As the sun set over Assisi, we returned to our hotel for dinner, grateful for the experiences of the day and looking forward to exploring more of this holy town in the days to come.
