After two full days of pilgrimage, today began with a slightly later start, allowing us to set off at 8:45 AM feeling refreshed and ready for another day of faith-filled exploration. We started with a walk over the Esquiline Hill, making our way to the Church of St. Alphonsus—home to the beloved icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. This sacred image holds special significance for us, as a replica hangs in our own diocesan shrine at Great Billing. It was a moving experience to stand before the original, reflecting on Our Lady’s intercession and protection.
As we arrived early, we took a spontaneous detour to visit the Basilica of Santa Prassede, a hidden gem filled with stunning mosaics and a rich spiritual history. This unexpected stop was a reminder that pilgrimage is not just about the planned itinerary, but also about embracing the moments of grace that arise along the way.
Following this, we returned to St. Alphonsus for Mass, celebrating in the presence of the miraculous icon. It was a profound moment of prayer and connection, uniting us with the countless pilgrims who have sought Our Lady’s help over the centuries.
From there, we continued to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the great Marian churches of Rome. Here, we passed through our third Holy Door, embracing once again the graces of the Jubilee Year. A highlight of our visit was ascending to the upper-floor balcony to admire the breathtaking 13th-century mosaic, a stunning depiction of Mary’s role in salvation history.
After a well-earned lunch, our pilgrimage led us to the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the mother church of all churches. Stepping through its Holy Door, we completed our journey through the four major Holy Doors of Rome—a rare and spiritually enriching experience that deepened our sense of unity with the universal Church.
On our way back to the hotel, we made one final stop—descending into history at San Clemente. Exploring its 1st and 4th-century levels, we traced the layers of faith that have built up over the centuries, from ancient pagan sites to early Christian worship spaces. Standing in these sacred spaces reminded us of the enduring presence of Christ throughout time.
With grateful hearts, we returned to our hotel for dinner and rest, reflecting on the incredible encounters of the day. Having now completed the pilgrimage to all four Holy Doors of Rome, we continue forward, ever more aware of the grace and hope that surrounds us on this journey.
Stay with us for more reflections as we walk together as Pilgrims of Hope!
