St Thomas More Catholic School in Bedford warmly welcomed students and staff from six Catholic schools across the Diocese of Northampton for a Pilgrims of Hope Jubilee Day. The schools in attendance included Saint Thomas Becket Secondary School, Northampton; Saint Paul’s Secondary School, Milton Keynes; St Joseph’s and St Gregory’s Primary School, Bedford; St Edward’s Primary School, Kettering; Our Lady’s Primary School, Wellingborough; and St John Rigby Primary School, Bedford.

The day was a celebration of hope, centred on reflection, dialogue, and community. Students participated in activities and discussions aimed at exploring the theme of hope in their lives, guided by faith and the spirit of pilgrimage. Workshops were led by CAFOD and the St Vincent de Paul Mini Vinnies, providing students with opportunities to engage with themes of social justice and charitable outreach. An inspiring session of praise and worship was led by the Saint Thomas Becket School Praise and Worship Group, filling the hall with music and prayer.

The highlight of the day was the visit from Bishop David Oakley, who spent time with the students, engaging in an open Q&A session. Students posed thoughtful questions to the Bishop, ranging from “How should we read the Gospels?” to “What’s it like to be the Bishop of Northampton?” Bishop David responded with warmth and insight, encouraging students to deepen their understanding of the Gospels and share their faith with confidence.

In his homily during the closing liturgy, Bishop David posed a reflective question to the students: “How do you understand the word hope from your own experience?” He went on to explain that the Latin translation reveals a deeper meaning: “pilgrims into hope.” This, he said, reminds us that hope is not a passive feeling but a journey—one that calls us to move forward in faith, trusting in God’s plan.

The Pilgrims of Hope Jubilee Day concluded with a spirit of unity and inspiration, as students left with a renewed sense of purpose and hope, ready to continue their own pilgrimages of faith.

St Thomas More Catholic School, together with the participating schools, expressed their gratitude to Bishop David for his time and for sharing his reflections, making the Jubilee Day a memorable and faith-filled experience for all involved.
