For evangelisation in the city

Let us pray that in large cities often marked by anonymity and loneliness we find new ways to proclaim the Gospel, discovering creative paths to build community.

Pope Leo XIV’s prayer intention for August invites Catholics around the world to pray for evangelisation in the city, asking the faithful to discover new and creative ways of sharing the Gospel in places often marked by anonymity and loneliness.

As towns and cities continue to grow, they bring together people from every background and culture. While urban life offers opportunity and connection, it can also leave many feeling isolated, unseen and searching for meaning. This month’s prayer intention reminds us that these very places are fertile ground for the Gospel and for building communities rooted in hope, friendship and faith.

In his accompanying prayer, the Holy Father addresses Christ as the Good Shepherd who “walks through our streets and squares” and silently accompanies those seeking meaning amid the noise and pace of city life. He asks the Lord to give the Church “a creative and deep faith” that is lived through simple acts of love and service.

The prayer calls on Catholics to become “bold and creative missionaries”, reaching out to those on the margins, consoling the lonely and creating communities where no one feels invisible.

As Pope Leo prays:

“May our urban communities be open and welcoming homes, places where hope is shared, where no one feels invisible, and where the joy of your Gospel shines in the hidden lives of so many brothers and sisters.”

This intention resonates strongly with the Church’s mission to be present wherever people live and work, offering the hope of Christ in everyday life. Whether through parish outreach, acts of neighbourly kindness, welcoming newcomers, supporting those experiencing loneliness, or simply witnessing to the Gospel through our daily lives, every Christian is called to help build communities of faith and belonging.

Throughout August, let us unite with Catholics across the world in praying that our cities become places where Christ’s love is encountered, relationships flourish, and the Gospel continues to transform lives.

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network has also released its monthly video reflecting on this intention, together with the full prayer for August.
