The annual Renewal of Diaconal Commitment Day was celebrated with reverence and joy at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Leighton Buzzard on Saturday, 21st June. The occasion brought together the permanent deacons of the Diocese of Northampton, along with their wives, for a day of reflection, fellowship, and renewed dedication to their ministry of service.

Bishop David Oakley presided over the celebration, joined by Canon Tony Brennan, Head of Diaconal Formation for the diocese. In his homily, Bishop David gave thanks for the witness and ministry of the diaconate, reminding all present that the deacon’s calling is one of humility, joy, and deep communion with the life of the Church.

The day included the solemn renewal of promises made at ordination, as each deacon reaffirmed his commitment to serve the people of God in charity, word, and liturgy. The presence and participation of their wives was also recognised, with special prayers offered in thanksgiving for their support and shared vocation.

Canon Tony Brennan, who is also the Episcopal Vicar for the Priest Vicariate, has always  expressed gratitude for the dedication shown by the deacons across the diocese and spoken many times of the ongoing need to support and form new men for this vital ministry.

The day concluded with a time for fraternal conversation, deepening the bonds of community among the diaconal families of the Diocese of Northampton.
