The Universal Church has been given a significant new liturgical gift with the formal inscription of Saint John Henry Newman, Priest and Doctor of the Church, into the General Roman Calendar, to be celebrated each year on 9 October as an Optional Memorial.

The decision was confirmed in a Decree of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, issued on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 following Pope Leo XIV’s proclamation of Saint John Henry Newman as a Doctor of the Church on the Solemnity of All Saints, 1 November 2025, in Saint Peter’s Square.

A Doctor for the whole Church

In proclaiming Newman a Doctor of the Church, Pope Leo XIV described him as a luminous figure for the Church’s educational mission, naming him, together with Saint Thomas Aquinas, co-Patron of the Church’s work in education. The subsequent inscription of his feast in the General Roman Calendar confirms his importance not only for the English-speaking world, but for the entire Catholic Church.

The Decree highlights Newman as a man led by the “kindly light” of God’s grace, words immortalised in his famous hymn Lead, Kindly Light. That same light guided his long intellectual and spiritual journey, culminating in his reception into the Catholic Church in 1845, his ordination to the priesthood, and his founding of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in England. Created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879, Newman died in Birmingham in 1890 and was canonised by Pope Francis in 2019.

Truth sought, truth found

The Prefect of the Dicastery, Cardinal Arthur Roche, notes that Newman’s inclusion in the General Roman Calendar is intended to present him as an “outstanding example of the constant search for the truth that enlightens and saves”. His life united rigorous intellectual enquiry with deep pastoral charity, expressed through preaching, teaching, writing, and care for the poor.

The official liturgical texts accompanying the new memorial draw richly on this spiritual journey. The Collect prays that, through Newman’s intercession and example, the faithful may be led “out of shadows and images into the fullness of truth”, a phrase that beautifully captures his lifelong vocation.

Liturgical celebration

From now on, on 9 October, the Church may celebrate Saint John Henry Newman using texts drawn from the Common of Pastors or Doctors of the Church. The readings present him as a disciple formed by wisdom, docility to God’s will, and the ability to draw “what is new and what is old” from the treasure of faith, qualities that made him, in the fullest sense, a teacher of the Church.

The Office of Readings includes a moving passage from Newman’s Apologia pro Vita Sua, where he describes his conversion to Catholicism as a ship finally reaching harbour after stormy seas, a testimony that continues to resonate with seekers of truth today.

A lasting legacy

With this inscription, Saint John Henry Newman now stands officially among the great Doctors who shape the Church’s prayer as well as her thought. His motto, Cor ad cor loquitur, “Heart speaks to heart”, reminds the faithful that authentic faith unites mind and heart, reason and prayer.

As the Church celebrates his memorial each year, Newman’s witness invites all believers ,especially educators, students, and seekers to trust the kindly light of God’s grace, to persevere through doubt and difficulty, and to find peace in the fullness of Catholic truth.
