Parishioners at St Edward’s Catholic Church, Kettering, marked the Feast of St Christopher, 25 July, with the traditional blessing of vehicles following Mass.

Canon Gregory Marchwinski and Fr Elvis blessed cars and other vehicles, asking God’s protection upon all who travel and those who use the roads each day. The annual custom, celebrated around the Feast of St Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, is a reminder that every journey can begin and end with prayer, placing our lives and the lives of others into God’s loving care.

According to Christian tradition, St Christopher carried travellers safely across a dangerous river. One day he carried a small child whose weight became almost unbearable. The child revealed himself to be Christ, explaining that Christopher had carried not only the Saviour of the world but the weight of the world’s sins. This enduring story has made St Christopher a symbol of Christ’s presence with us on life’s journey and the reason he is honoured as the patron saint of travellers.

The blessing provided a simple but powerful witness of faith, bringing together parishioners of all ages in a tradition that continues to remind us that Christ accompanies us in every aspect of our daily lives, including the journeys we make each day.
