Each year on the third Sunday of Ordinary Time we celebrate the Sunday of the Word of God. In 2025, the Sunday of the Word of God will be celebrated on 26th January.
The Sunday of the Word of God was instituted by Pope Francis in 2019 through his apostolic letter Aperuit Illis. Celebrated annually on the third Sunday of Ordinary Time, the day was established to emphasise the importance of Sacred Scripture in the life of the Church and the daily lives of Christians. Pope Francis envisioned it as an opportunity to foster a closer relationship with the Word of God, promoting prayerful reading of the Bible and greater understanding of its significance. By dedicating this day to the Scriptures, the Pope sought to remind the faithful that the Bible is not merely a historical or theological text but a living Word that guides, inspires, and transforms believers in their journey of faith.
Bishop David will lead a liturgical celebration in our Cathedral on Sunday 26 at 3pm. Those who proclaim the Word in their parishes are invited to attend either in person or online here.
