How To Respond When A Young Man Inquires about Priesthood
When a young person expresses interest in the Catholic priesthood, it is a profound moment of grace and an opportunity for encouragement, guidance, and discernment. The response should be thoughtful, affirming, and rooted in Church teaching. Below are principles for different roles within the Church community.
General Principles for All Responders:
- Listen Attentively: Encourage the young person to share their thoughts, experiences, and motivations without judgment.
- Affirm and Encourage: Express gratitude for their openness to God’s call and reinforce that vocational discernment is a journey.
- Pray With and For Them: Offer to pray together and commit to keeping them in prayer.
- Provide Accurate Information: Clarify misconceptions and provide reliable resources about the priesthood and seminary formation.
- Connect Them to a Mentor: Encourage conversations with a priest or our vocations director.
- Respect Their Freedom: Recognise that discernment takes time, and avoid undue pressure.
- Encourage Holiness in Daily Life: Emphasise prayer, sacraments, and service as foundational to any vocation.
